چکیده

When performing binaural spatialisation, it is widely accepted that the choice of head related transfer functions (HRTFs), and in particular use individually measured ones, can have an impact on localisation accuracy, externalization, overall realism. Yet HRTF choices speech-in-noise performances cocktail party-like scenarios has not been investigated depth. This paper introduces a study where 22 participants were presented with frontal speech target two lateral maskers, spatialised using set non-individual HRTFs. Speech reception threshold (SRT) was for each HRTF. Furthermore, SRT predicted by existing perception model, values compensated attempt to remove HRTF-specific benefits. Results show significant differences among SRTs different HRTFs, consistently results model. Individual between their HRTFs could also be found, but significance reduced after compensation. The implications these findings are relevant several research areas spatial hearing perception, suggesting when testing within binaurally rendered virtual environments, individual should carefully considered.

Direct comparison of the impact of head tracking, reverberation, and individualized head-related transfer functions on the spatial perception of a virtual speech source.

A study of sound localization performance was conducted using headphone-delivered virtual speech stimuli, rendered via HRTF-based acoustic auralization software and hardware, and blocked-meatus HRTF measurements. The independent variables were chosen to evaluate commonly held assumptions in the literature regarding improved localization: inclusion of head tracking, individualized HRTFs, and ear...

Toward orthogonal non-individualised head-related transfer functions for forward and backward directional sound: cluster analysis and an experimental study.

Individualised head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) have been shown to accurately simulate forward and backward directional sounds. This study explores directional simulation for non-individualised HRTFs by determining orthogonal HRTFs for listeners to choose between. Using spectral features previously shown to aid forward-backward differentiation, 196 non-individualised HRTFs were clustered...

Subjective Selection of Non-individual Head-related Transfer Functions

The individualization of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) for virtual acoustics is a key technique for the optimization of the directional reproduction. This paper presents a subjective selection method for a fast, individual selection of one HRTF from a catalogue of non-individual ones. The selection method gives random access to sounds filtered with the HRTFs. In a first selection step...
